19세기 중반 가메야마 천황이 은퇴 후에 지은 별장 현재는 선종의 절로 사용 삼문과 수로가 유명 난젠지는 선종사찰로 칠당가람 중에서 불당을 제외한 삼문, 법당, 방장, 욕실, 경장, 고리로 이루어져 있다. 임제종 남선사파의 대본산이라고 하지만, 현재는 전쟁의 화재로 모두 소실되고 복원된 가람들이 세워져 있다. 난젠지 가는 길에는 작은 수로가 있는데 이는 일본 최대의 호수 비와호에서 내려오는 물이다. 이 물길을 지나쳐 난젠지에 이르면 난젠지 삼문을 볼 수 있는데, 이는 일본에서 세 손가락에 꼽히는 곳으로 매우 크고 유명하다. 쿄토에는 토요토미 히데요시의 손길이 닿지 않는 사찰을 찾는게 어려울 정도. 난젠지 역시 토요토미 히데요시가 기증한 대방장이 위치해 있다. 내부에는 일본화 124점이 있으며 정원도 딸려 있어 관람하기 매우 좋다. 모래를 사용한 전용적인 카레산스이식 정원으로 호랑이 새끼가 표범에게 잡아먹히지 않도록 한마리씩 차례로 강을 건너게 만드는 어미 호랑이의 지혜를 묘사했다고 하여 유명하다. 난젠지 안에도 비와호의 물이 흐르는 수로각이 있는데, 매우 오래된 수로이지만 여전히 물은 힘차게 흐르고 있다. 난젠지 안에서도 어디를 가느냐에 따라서 입장료가 각기 매겨지고 있어 모두 둘러보려면 꽤 많은 입장료를 내야 한다.

Nanzen-ji Temple is a 3-minute walk away. The Nanzen-ji district in Kyoto is known for its Meiji-period villas. While Kyoto boasts numerous residential areas, the Nanzen-ji vicinity stands out for its impressive collection of grand villas. Situated in Higashiyama, Nanzen-ji enjoys a convenient proximity to central Kyoto stations, including Keihan Sanjo. Many villas of politicians and Millionaire were constructed in this area during the Meiji period. This area is characterized by its gardens. Many magnificent gardens were built using innovative designs, such as channeling water from Lake Biwa into the gardens, and by utilizing nearby Mount Higashiyama as "borrowed landscape". It is said that during the Meiji period prominent figures from various circles built villas to be used at guesthouse. Even today, there are villas here which are owned by well-known people from the world of finance from all over the world, etc.
