Where the Balbi’s Arch stands today, there used to be the main gate to the fortified city of Porton della Pescheria.

Leading to Grisla Street away from the main square is this imposing arch from the late 1670s, and named after Daniel Balbi who was the mayor at the time. The arch replaced an old town gate and bears the classic Venetian hallmark of the Lion of St. Mark. Curiously there are also two stone heads, one on either side of the arch. On one you can make out the head of a bearded Venetian, and on the other there’s a Turk, wearing a turban.

Balbi Arch is located at the former gate of the old fish market. The old gates were demolished in the 17th century. Balbi arch is made in the same place, and was named after Balbi, a former mayor of Rovinj. At the top of the arch is the lion, the symbol of the Venetian republic, with an open book (meaning that Rovinj without the war was ruled by government of the Venetian Republic). The book is an inscription “VICTORIA TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA Mevsim”. At the door were Turkish and Venetian head, but their meaning is deciphered. A baroque archway called “Balbijev luk”, which today serves as the entrance into the old town.
