Founded in 1807 as a literary society, the Boston Athenæum published America’s first literary magazine and acquired an extensive library of books and works of art. It moved to its current home, an imposing purpose-built structure, in 1847.

Founded in 1807, the Athenaeum is one of the oldest private libraries in the nation. Members pay a yearly fee for access to its holdings of more than 500,000 volumes of history, biography, and literature, as well as a collection of paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs. Among its rare books is the memoir of highway robber James Allen, which is stomach-churning not so much for its content as for its binding: per his last will and testament, the book is bound in Allen’s own skin. On a less creepy note, many of the Athenaeum’s trustees were instrumental in establishing Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.

Boston Antheneum is one of its most important. Founded in 1807, it is one of the oldest independent libraries in the U.S.. Boston-Featuring not only books but art galleries, and exhibits, the once small collection is now comprised of over half a million volumes on everything from fiction and literature to Boston history.

The Boston Athenæum is one of the oldest independent libraries in the United States. It is also one of a number of membership libraries, for which patrons pay a yearly subscription fee to use Athenæum services. The institution was founded in 1807 by the Anthology Club of Boston, Massachusetts. It is located at 10 1/2 Beacon Street on Beacon Hill. Resources of the Boston Athenæum include a large circulating book collection; a public gallery; a rare books collection of over 100,000 volumes; an art collection of 100,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, and decorative arts; research collections including one of the world's most important collections of primary materials on the American Civil War; and a public forum offering lectures, readings, concerts, and other events.
