Fascinating little island off Barrow-in-Furness with a castle, pub and its own king! The ferry runs from April to September, weather permitting.

The Cistercian monks of Furness Abbey used the island as a safe harbour and built a warehouse there for the storage of grain, wine and wool. A castle was built around 1327 to oversee trade and provide defence. Today, the ruined castle is managed by English Heritage (free entry). Take a short boat trip and explore the ruins of Piel castle and enjoy a drink and something to eat at the 'King of Piel's' pub or the little cafe at Rampside.
