A few minutes walk from the front door to an incredible panoramic view of the mountains and Asheville! There are also many forest walking trails. You'll see a closed gate on the entry road to the observatory - but it's open for walking guests!

The Asheville Astronomy Club offers monthly stargazes that are open and free to the public. While Lookout is on the campus of UNCA, I highly recommend going to one at Grasslands Observatory, in Madison County. It's way up on top of a private mountain and is a dark sky observatory (Lookout is not dark sky). Bring a picnic and catch the sunset (at either) before the stars come out. Even if you don't have an interest in the night sky, going up to Grasslands is an unforgettable experience that is really a locals-only known thing to do here. You will have an amazingly fun time. The folks that put it on are so friendly and eager to share the knowledge (and scopes). Google Asheville Astronomy Club and go to star gazes and you'll see the dates.
