The statue shows Guerrero, his spouse Zazil Ha who was the daughter of a Maya leader (crouching behind him with an infant), and their three children. Guerrero was one of 10 shipwrecked Spanish sailors captured by the Maya. Only two sailors survived. The other survivor was rescued and became a translator for Cortes. In contrast Guerrero became a noted Maya warrior who fought the Spanish, and with Zazil Ha became the parents of the first mestizos in Mexico.
