Just across the river Severn about 30 minutes drive Chepstow is a Norman castle perched high above the banks of the river Wye in southeast Wales. Construction began at Chepstow in 1067.
Book 24 hours in advance due to COVID restrictions. Approx 2 hour visit. Great views of the River Wye. Good pub/bar next to car park (The Three Tuns). Easy walk into Chepstow town from car park. Coffee one in town is great.
"Beautifully preserved Chepstow Castle stretches out along a limestone cliff above the River Wye like a history lesson in stone."
One of the first Norman Castles built to separate the Welsh (Celts) from the English under Norman rule post the 1066 invasion. A good example of the type, and interesting for the way it uses the steep cliff face rising from the River Wye as part of its defensive posture.
Check out the oldest Stone Castle in Britain. It's open to the public daily with a variety of events on throughout the year. Set on cliffs over the River Wye the views are stunning whilst Chepstow town centre and all its shops, cafes etc are located just behind.

“Fancy something a bit bigger in your search for historic religious buildings the Tintern wins hands down. A beautiful site and breathtaking architecture get your mind buzzing wondering what the place used to be like. When you finished being blown away by its beauty and scale, have a cuppa in the tea room opposite. Open fires and cosy atmosphere.”

“Great for a ploughman’s and ale and walk along the river. A unique pub set into the rock, situated by a disused iron railway bridge linking Redbrook and Penallt. Approx 1 hour door to door. ”
