Culebra Meat Market is more than barbacoa and Big Red on a Saturday morning. No, you’re gonna find carnicería, produce, panadería, taquería and a huge variety of Mexican products, all thanks to the vision and perseverance of Ezequiel Ramirez. Born in 1932 in San Jose del Resplandor, Guanajuato, Mexico, Ramirez dedicated himself to the buying and selling of cattle with his father in Laredo and, after a 20 year diversion to the construction industry, both in Mexico and San Antonio, he returned to the cattle business that he loved, opening his first meat market, Farias Meat Market, on Poplar Street in 1980. Three years later, he moved his business to 2800 Culebra Road and renamed it the Culebra Meat Market. Today, Ezequiel's family now owns nineteen locations throughout San Antonio, bringing high-quality products at fair prices to the community. So, that's the history....but, what you really need to know, in our opinion, is what the vibe is like. Well, it's just what you'd expect - meat of all species, accoutrement of all varieties and a brilliant blend of local residents that add more flavor than the barbacoa spices in the display stand near the butcher counter. Yeah, this is the real deal....a real butcher shop with grinders and slicers and knowledgeable butchers and everything you need to tenderize and spice and perfect your next meal of meat. And, sweet little old ladies picking-up the Sunday roast or the weekend supply of fajitas....
