The Glass House

Philip Johnson’s residence from 1949 until his death was this home he designed for himself with floor-to-ceiling glass walls so he could be a part of the surrounding greenery, sky, and treeline even when inside. Plan ahead—tickets tend to sell out quickly during its May through November season. You can get here on the Metro North New Haven Line, but it’s quicker to drive. Most of the furniture came from Johnson’s apartment in the city, designed in 1930 by Mies van der Rohe. In fact, Mies designed the iconic daybed just for Johnson.
