Greenock's hidden gem After a £2 million refurbishment that kept the Museum closed for 3 years, it's open again. The glass ceiling has made the atmosphere lighter and the exhibits appear brighter now, helping the visitor to enjoy the collections more easily. The Museum opened its doors in 1876, thanks to the funding of James McLean, a timber merchant. It contains various collections of Scottish and British Art and not only. Among the highlights, it's a Mummy Cartonnage from Herakleopolis Magna and a temple stone of Bast at Bubastis. The Museum is connected to the Watt Library. There is a small shop, free internet, beautiful sofas for a break and very polite people at the reception desk, ready to answer your questions. Admission is free and the opening times are: 10.00' to 16.00' from Wednesday to Saturday.

This is Inverclyde’s main museum. There is an exhibition in honour of the Greenock-born inventor James Watt (inventor of the steam engine, the world’s first photocopier, parallel motion and Watt’s linkage). Other collections include fine art, Egyptology and natural history. A must-see for visitors!
