Drinking water
On the long hike to and from Trolltunga, you will need lots of fluid to stay hydrated. We advise you to bring plenty of water, as well as energising snacks such as chocolate and fruit. You can fill your water bottles in Skjeggedal, by the P2 parking lot.
Many hikers do refill their bottles from the streams in the high mountains. (NB. The water near the cabin areas is not safe to drink!) Do not fill water until you have reached the first emergency shelter just before Floren, about halfway to Trolltunga. But you should avoid filling water near Trolltunga itself. It is always better to fill water from a running stream than from a lake, but be advised that water may contain many impurities after heavy rainfall. If you’re camping, you can boil water to make it safe to drink.
Please note that the water in the wilderness is not tested, so we cannot guarantee that it is safe.
For everyone’s safety, please keep your toilet visits well away from the streams and lakes, and downhill from the trails.

The trail leads through the high mountains between Kinsarvik and Lofthus. The hike takes about 6 - 9 hours and has a total difference in altitude of 1,100 meters - in other words; it is a strenuous hike. But you will be rewarded with the unique contrasts in the Hardanger landscape - the terrain varies from forest to high mountains and lush orchards with thousands of apple trees. Additionally, you will have a fantastic view over the Sørfjorden, parts of the Folgefonna Glacier, and scenic nature.
The 16-kilometer-long hiking trail connecting Kinsarvik and Lofthus can be walked in both directions. Most hikers choose to start in Røte near Kinsarvik. To do this, turn off at the Esso petrol station in Kinsarvik and follow the road as far as it is paved. Here you can park for a parking fee of NOK 100 (payable by Vipps or bank transfer).
At the beginning of the hike, you follow the gravel road from Røte up to Heng, 750 meters above sea level. From Heng, the hiking trail is marked with blue D-letters (D stands for Dronning, which means queen). The last part of the hike down to Lofthus leads over the well-known monk stairs. Husedalen valley parking
Jordalsnuten, with its 1043 meters above sea level, is one of the spectacular peaks that encircles Odda. Majestically located in the middle between Buerdalen and Strandfossen along Sandvinsvatnet, you get a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of the fjord, mountains and glacier. The tour starts from the car park at Strand where it goes up steeply with adapted steps for the first part. The trip is estimated to take about 4-6 hours. On the left side of the path, Strandfossen cascades down the mountainside and creates a mysterious and magical atmosphere. After the first ascent, one comes to the Fossasete stol area, which is located by Fossasetevatnet approx. 505 meters above sea level. From here on, the trip goes north of the lake and slopes upwards to the next stilt area called Liasete, surrounded by Liasetevatnet approx. 647 meters above sea level. As you get higher in the terrain, the Folgefonna glacier comes into view in the background of the lake. Here you meet a fork in the trail where you have the option of continuing to Reinanuten or down into Buerdalen, or continue to the top of Jordalsnuten. The path to Jordalsnuten goes steeply upwards, but after a few hundred meters of altitude the landscape flattens out more and you come up on the ridge of Jordalsnuten. The last part of the trip along the ridge goes steadily uphill until you reach the top. With a panoramic view of Sandvinsvatnet, the center of Odda, the Hardangerfjord and the mountain area towards both Tyssedal and Røldal, and combined with the view of Folgefonna, Buarbreen and the steep Buardalen, it is truly spectacular. The return goes the same way back down via Liasete and Fossasete, alternatively you can go down via Buerdalen.

Røldal Stave Church
The estimated age of the Church is generally dated to between 1200-1250. A baptismal font in the church is dated to between 1200 and 1250. A crucifix in the church dates from about 1250. The altarpiece by German painter Gottfried Hendtzchell from Wroclaw in Silesia dates to 1629.
The Church has a rectangular-shaped nave and chancel. The baptismal font is of soapstone and dated 1200-1300 century. The Bergen Museum holds a variety of building components and other artifacts from the medieval church. These include altar frontal and wooden sculptures of St. Olaf from about 1250, of the Virgin Mary with child from about 1250, and the Archangel Michael, dated about 1200. In the Middle Ages, Røldal Church received large donations from many of pilgrims who flocked to the church. As a result, the small village where the church is located, became quite prosperous. In the 17th century the walls inside the church were richly decorated with paintings.[4]
During reconstruction of the church in 1844, some of the history of the church was uncovered. This led to an investigation to determine how the church was built. The resulting belief is that Røldal Stave Church was quite different from other stave churches. Some controversy developed about whether this is in fact a stave church or rather an example of the assumed predecessor type, a post church.
From 1913 to 1918, the church underwent an extensive renovation and restoration. Paneling from the 19th century was removed and the Renaissance interior was restored. A new gallery was also built around the church to protect the wall tables. The church reconstruction was led by Norwegian architect Jens Zetlitz Monrad Kielland (1866–1926), and the color restoration was performed by Norwegian painter Domenico Erdmann (1879–1940), who was assisted by Norwegian painter Alfred Obert Hagn (1882–1958), and Danish-Norwegian artist Ulrik Hendriksen (1891–1960).[3][5][6]
