Mangatoro Scenic Reserve

One of those hidden gems. 8 hectares of native Flora and Fauna. 15 min circular track walk, look for the Giant old totara( said to be one of the largest in NZ) Miro, Matai. Swim in the same river that flows past Tē Kanukā ( Mangatoro Stream) Stunning bird life, Tui, Bell birds, Grey Warbler, Fantail. Take a picnic from Tē Kanukā to relax in nature here. 15 min drive from Tē Kanukā.

Herbertville

An amazing Beach that boasts vastness and serenity. Just a short 40 min drive from Tē Kanukā. Take fish and chips from 'The Herbertville hotel', to the beach to enjoy or dine in. Good fishing off the beach, it can get a little cool at times so take a jacket.

Akitio

'Akitio' is a beach that continues to uphold New Zealands reputation for stunning coast line destinations. It is a definite must see while staying at Tē Kanukā. Just 1 hour and 20 min drive from Tē Kanukā. There is a little community there which supports the local boat club for socializing and a small Dairy for ice cream and snacks. Watch boats being launched off the beach or take a swim in the surf on a hot day. Good fishing at the river mouth and off the beach.

Ok, so this stunning scenic drive takes you towards Makuri and over'The Rising Sun" on Towai road. The area is known as ' Coonoor '- (an Indian word) which was settled in 1906ish as a dairy farming area. The locals call it "The Rising Sun" as you drive up and over the Puketoi Range and head towards the coast. You can watch the sun rise above the sea if you are up there early enough. !!! Please note that this road is an unsealed road!!! Take a visit at the Waihi falls on your adventure (1hr 15 min drive, see other guide book) or continue out to 'The Pongaroa Hotel' (1hr 30 min drive, see other guide book) for lunch or dinner.
