Retail

If you are a fan of browsing tons of used (and some new) books, records, board games, cassettes, DVDs, CDs, audio books, etc. etc., this is a great place to spend at least an hour...or two! Half Price Books began in an old laundromat in Dallas near Lovers Lane and Inwood Road but this has been the "flagship" or "headquarters" store for many years. There are now more than 120 HPBs across the country.

The first planned shopping center in the U.S. (hpvillage.com) and the prototype for shopping centers all over the country, this unique Mediterranean Spanish-style development was constructed in 1931. Includes high-end designer stores, a grocery store and restaurants.

Considered the nation's first and leading retailer focused solely on storage and organization, the Container Store began in Dallas in July of 1978 near the intersection of Preston Road and Forest Lane but outgrew that-- the "flagship" store is now on W. Northwest Highway, a "Next Generation" prototype store that is worth a visit. And, it's not far from other retailers and activities mentioned in this guide, such as the flagship store for Half Price Books (it's just a few blocks away), and the George Bush Presidential Center (it's about a mile south).

Sightseeing

If you're a fan of 43rd U.S. President George Bush (and former Texas governor), or even if you're not, the George W. Bush Presidential Center is worth visiting, especially for history buffs. Lots of cool exhibits, and there's a re-creation of the Oval Office where you can sit in the chair behind the desk (great photo opp). It's adjacent to Southern Methodist University (SMU), where First Lady Laura Bush attended, a pretty campus that's always nice to traverse on foot or drive through. Behind the Presidential Center is a unique park that features native Texas plants, that's free to walk through, and open late in the summer, until sunset. Near the southern edge of campus, not far from the football stadium on Mockingbird Lane, is Highland Park United Methodist Church, where the Bushes are members (BTW, George and Laura live in Dallas on Daria Place in the Preston Hollow neighborhood, a bit northwest of there).

Fun and Games

Free Play Arcade (freeplayinc.com) has several locations now, but this is the first in the area and first of its kind in the U.S. If you're a Baby Boomer or Gen Xer, you can relive your video arcade days, and if you're a fan of "Stranger Things," you can imagine you're with Max and the gang, at this unique indoor entertainment option. Free Play Arcade changed the arcade industry in 2015 with this first location , featuring 100 vintage pinball and video arcade machines, running 100% with original parts and offering unlimited play with one admission fee-- plus a bar and food menu. We took our older kids here and had a blast. Good food and drinks.

Tableside Food and Drink Service While Watching a Movie

Some Texans may think this concept started in Austin with Alamo Drafthouse but Dallas had it beat by 10 years, when the Granada Movie Grill opened in 1987 on lower Greenville Ave. While the Granada is now a live music venue, the movie grill owners expanded the concept to other locations and renamed it Studio Movie Grill. There are now 7 locations in the area and many more beyond; Alamo Drafthouse also now has several locations in the area, including Richardson. Studiomoviegrill.com; drafthouse.com. (note: Alamo has age policies; check before you go.) Both companies offer a good experience.

Fletcher's Corny Dogs

The fried dough-covered hot dog on a stick was invented in 1938 in Dallas and has been sold at the Texas State Fair since 1942. ("Big Tex," as seen on the cover of this guide, is a giant, talking icon of the Fair.) Since the Fair was canceled for 2020, the folks at Fletcher's have been doing pop-ups around the area, offering the tasty treat through food trucks. Find out where they'll be next at fletcherscornydogs.com. For the same recipe offered by a different Fletcher's family member, order curbside pickup from corndogwithnoname.com., 10220 Technology Blvd., Dallas, 214-810-3052.

The 7-11 Store

The convenience store industry began in Dallas in 1927 when a neighborhood ice house near 12th St. and Edgefield Ave. began adding grocery products to its offerings. The Southland Ice Company, owner of the icehouse , began the Tote 'em line of corner stores from there, which evolved into 7-11 (because their hours were from 7 a.m.-11 p.m.) 7-Eleven continued operating a store at the original location until 1995. Today it's the site of the LULAC National Education Service Center, and there are more than 71,000 7-11s in existence elsewhere.

The Frozen Margarita

While you can now find this frosty drink at just about every eating establishment that offers Mexican, Tex-Mex or Latin food, from the cheap to the fancy, it began at Mariano's Restaurant in Dallas in 1971, when Mariano Martinez invented the frozen margarita machine. Mariano's Hacienda is now located at 6300 Skillman St. in Dallas as well as in Arlington, and both still serve "the original."
