Guidebook to Beautiful East Bali

The region of East Bali

Villa Nilaya is situated in the western-most part of the regency of Karangasem, in East Bali. It's a great base to explore the beauty of East Bali, including the dive spots of Amed, the Bali Aga villages of East and West Tengenan, the stunningly beautiful rice fields of Sideman, the port of Padang Bai and the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, which can be accessed by public ferry and also by private fishing boat directly from the villa.
Candi Dasa is the main 'large' town closest to Villa Nilaya (about 5 km) - it's a quiet spot compared to the other main tourist towns, and you're unlikely to be disturbed by touts here. With restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, 'antique' furniture and clothing boutiques, dive outfits, IT services, a speciality baker, pizzeria, wine merchant with some specialty food items and money changers and several ATMS. The Gandhi Ashram is also located in Candi Dasa, run by yogi, Kawi Dana. The centre of Candi Dasa is defined by a beautiful temple and extensive lotus pond located by the sea. Fishing boats can be hired here or directly at Villa Nilaya for day or short excursions. Candi Dasa is 1.5-2hrs from Denpasar airport depending on traffic and is the gateway to Eastern shores of the island, Looking for a great place to dine ? Try Vincent's, opposite the lotus pond, for cool cocktails and stylish cuisine. I chose this area to build my home because of its low-key ambience and close relationship with authentic village life. This has changed little - it's a delightful destination!

OUR VILLAGE OF MENDIRA ('jalan' means street) Is a small , quiet village, which for the last several years has been runner-up in the Bali Clean Green Competition to keep villages clean, tidy and environmentally friendly. The village is friendly but people here respect your privacy. They are not trying to sell you things … they have their work as fisherfolk, taxi drivers and rice farmers and some professionals. They will leave you to enjoy your holiday in peace. Within minutes of the villa you will find yourself amongst green padi (rice) fields, spectacular mountain ridges, rivers, waterfalls, temples, and turquoise waters. You don’t need to go far to discover these elements of traditional Balinese life and enrich your understanding of the culture. Even in our village, you can witness ceremonies at the beautiful seaside temple and the forest temple, and there are sometimes cremation ceremonies within the forest clearing of our village. Balinese are Hindus, and therefore the dead are cremated. These are not grim ceremonies. The release of the spirit into Nirvana is understood as an occasion for prayer and well-wishing. Cremations are very expensive, and it is not uncommon for the body to be kept buried until such times that the family can afford the cremation ceremony with all of its lavish food, blessings and days of chanting by a priest hired for the purpose. Some villages will organize a mass cremation ceremony over several days to alleviate the enormous person l burden of bidding the ancestors farewell. In our village of Mendira, this usually happens in July or August (depending on the moon calendar) in a forest clearing about ten minutes' walk from Villa Nilaya, and visitors are welcome provided they respect local customs, dress modestly and behave with respect. Villa Nilaya is located in a quiet, sea-side cul de sac, away from traffic and commercial activity. It's a really special place, with a sparkling sea and an awesome panorama from sunrise to sunset ... you are warmly invited to be our guest and enjoy the local hospitality of beautiful East Bali!

Dressing respectfully to visit Temples in Bali

By dressing appropriately you not only respect the temple and its worshippers, but you'll earn their respect too. Bali's population is 87% Hindu (2018). MEN should cover their knees & thighs - preferably with a sarong, and a sash tied around the hips. Ideally you'll wear a 'udeng' a cap, and a shirt rather than singlet. WOMEN should cover their legs and knees with skirt or sarong. A kebaya blouse & waist sash complete the ensemble.
