THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND CANDIDASA 1) Take a fishing boat for snorkelling at Blue Lagoon; both the trip (only 10 minutes) and the snorkelling are great (we have some snorkelling gear at the villa and the fishing boat usually has some as well); 2) Take a car or fishing boat to White Sand Beach; this is a very nice beach, close to the villa (20 mts by either boat or car). You will be dropped at the beach and the boat will wait for you. There is nice swimming, but also massage and good food. Take a deck chair at Sunrise restaurant, and ask for Wayan. He is an ex-employee and treats customers from Villa Sanika and Villa Kaniksa (our other villa in Candidasa) particularly well. He also organises fishing trips (2-3 hours), which is really fun and highly recommended. He will clean the catch and our staff in the villa will grill it for you the same evening. 3) Water palace (Tirta Gangga), which you can combine with a visit to Amlapura market and a nice lunch (with fantastic views) at Bali Asli. The drive to Tirta Gangga is about 35 mts. Bring your swimming clothes, as the water palace was set up as a bathing place for royalty and the fresh water springs are wonderfully refreshing even now; 4) There are a lot of diving shops in Candidasa. The best one is Bambu Divers. Talk to a guy called Gerard, he is a Dutch and very experienced. If you are an experienced diver he has a number of different trips to choose from, usually leaving by speedboat from Padang Bay (pick-up by car from the villa). If you are a novice diver, I believe he has some programs as well; 5) There is very nice rafting to be done at the Telaga Waja river in Sidemen. You get picked up by a van in the morning and take a 2 hour scenic drive to the start of the rafting. The rafting itself is 2-3 hours, easy going, with some excitement here and there, but very safe (we did this many times with our kids). It ends with a lunch and a return to the villa. So count on a full day for this one. There are several operators, but let our staff negotiate a good price for you. 6) Hiking; there are very nice hikes in and around Candidasa. The one I recommend is through the rice fields, with the view of the Gunung Agung behind you and ending in Tenganan (see below). It is a 1 1/2 hour walk, and you need to be moderately fit for this (the last part is going down quite steeply). We know some good tour guides that can speak English and that can add a lot of ‘colour’ to the journey. 7) Jazz evenings at Vincent's. This is a bar/restaurant around 10 minutes by car in the main part of Canidasa. It is run by 2 Dutchmen and has a very nice ambience. And excellent food! Each Thursday they have a live jazz performance. Ask the staff to book at table in advance (near the stage). 8) A bit further away is Ubud, the artistic 'capital' of Bali. The center can be quite crowded, but there is lots to see. it is about a 90 minute drive from Sanika. You can combine this with the Bird Park, which I recently visited for the first time. A bit expensive for foreigners, but quite nice. In the same area is also the Safari park, but I have not yet been there myself. The best is to take a driver that knows his way in Ubud, so he can show you around to places that you are interested in (discuss this with the villa manager). 9) There is a very nice old village (Tenganan), where they still make woven textiles ('ikats') in the traditional way (one of only 2 paces where they still make the ‘double ikat’). It is just in front of Candidasa, 10 minutes drive from Villa Sanika, and worth a visit. Great place to buy souvenirs (the genuine stuff). People are friendly, but ’tawar’ (price negotiation) is still needed (and expected…) 10) At walking distance there is Andre’s spa, which provides very good and affordable massages (you can also order them to the villa if you prefer). 11) There are quite a few interesting temples in the area; there is Besakih temple on the slopes of the Gunung Agung. It is quite touristy, and not always a pleasant experience, but Besakih is the ‘mother temple’ in Bali and has a huge significance. Another nice temple is Goa Gajah, which can be combined with a trip to Ubud (recommended!). A smaller temple, not far from Candidasa, is Goa Lawah (‘bat cave temple’), can be easily combined with a trip ’south’ (Ubud, Gianyar, Bird Park, Safari Park etc). 12) Jewellery etc; there is a local silver artisan in Budakeling village (can be combined with Amlapura/Tirta Gangga), but if you are really interested you can visit Celuk Village (near Gianyar, can be combined with Bird Park annd/or Ubud 13) For F&B, I already mentioned Vincent’s and you can check out Trip Advisor as well for other eateries. For a more upmarket (and pricey) experience we recommend the Alila Hotel (10 minutes walk from Villa Sanika, 5 minutes via the beach at low tide) and on the other side (5 minutes by car, but not accessible by foot) is the renowned Amankila. Tthe latter is part of the exclusive Aman group and is beautifully located, with stunning sea views. The Alila is nice for dinner (choose a night that they have performances I would suggest), the Amankila should be visited at the end of the day, around 5 or so, for cocktails and sunset views…. Of course we serve lunches and dinners at the villa as well (please inform our staff in advance), and if our master chef from Villa Kaniksa is available you can enjoy famous dishes like 'babi guling' (suckling pig), 'bebek betutu' (duck wrapped in banana leaves) and seafood barbecue…...! 14) We recently added 2 kayaks to our inventory, which are are for your exclusive use. They are easy to handle and provide a great view of the beautiful coast line and Mount Gunung Agung rising behind it. Or take them out to the ’secret’ beach of the renowned Amankila resort (300 meters to the right of the villa). As to logistics, car plus driver can be arranged by your villa staff and are quite affordable. Most trips are are either half a day or full day and you can rent the car accordingly. Do try out some of these activities, I promise you that it will enhance your Bali experience….!
