로마의 4개 성당에 속하는 유명한 성당이다. 다른 이름으로는 ‘바실리카 리베리아나’라고도 한다. 전설에 의하면, 352년 8월 5일 더운 여름날에 교황 리베리오는 꿈에 성모 마리아를 만나게 된다. 성모 마리아는 눈이 내린 자리에 교회를 하나 지으라는 계시를 내린다. 더운 여름에 눈이 올 리 만무하지만, 실제로 교황은 에스퀼리노(Esquilino) 언덕에서 교회가 세워질 만한 곳에 하얗게 눈이 내린 것을 발견하였고, 그 자리에 산타 마리아 마조레 성당을 세웠다고 한다. 소성당의 제단 위에 이 ‘눈의 기적’에 관한 내용이 부조로 그려져 있으며, 이러한 전설 때문에 교회는 매년 8월 5일 하얀 꽃잎을 흩뿌리며 ‘눈의 기적’을 경축한다. 교황은 352년에 계시를 받았으나 실제로 성당의 기초를 세운 것은 431년이다. 또 13세기에 개수되었고 그 후에도 여러 번 보수되면서 다양한 건축 양식들을 지니게 되었다. 교회 내부에는 미켈란젤로가 만든 예배당과 지하 묘지에 자리한 박물관이 있다. 우뚝 솟아 있는 높이 75m의 로마네스크식 종루도 멋스러운데, 오래된 기초 위에 1370~1378년 동안 개조한 것이다. 피라미드 모양의 뾰족탑은 16세기에 만들어졌다. 두산백과 두피아 출처

Santa Maria Maggiore, is a Papal major basilica and the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome, Italy, from which size it receives the appellation "major". The ancient basilica enshrines the venerated image of Salus Populi Romani, l depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary as the health and protectress of the Roman people, l which was granted a Canonical coronation by Pope Gregory XVI on 15 August 1838 accompanied by his Papal bull Cœlestis Regina.

If you arrive at Termini Station, within walking distance you will find one of the most beautiful and majestic churches in Rome. The Basilica of Saint Mary Major is a Papal major basilica and the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome. The basilica enshrines the venerated image of Salus Populi Romani, depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary as the help and protectress of the Roman people, which was granted a Canonical coronation by Pope Gregory XVI on 15 August 1838 accompanied by his Papal bull Cælestis Regina. It is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome and the only one to have preserved the original early Christian structure, albeit with some additions. Legend has it that it arose at the explicit request of the Virgin Mary, who appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius (352-366). The Romanesque bell tower is 75 meters high, the highest in Rome, and was built between 1375-1376.
