“Beechenhurst is the ideal place to begin exploring the Forest of Dean. It has facilities for refreshments and toilets, as well as tourist information. There is a cycle trail which begins here as well as the Sculpture Trail through the forest, which includes a huge stained glass window as well as numerous and varied sculptures often made of natural substances. Half a mile up the hill on the B4226 you will find Speech House, built in 1669 but now an hotel which welcomes you to stay for afternoon tea in the Verderer's Court (for the protection of vert and venison) - for 300 years .the former courtroom used for trials when the forest was essentially a self governing entity. It was built as a hunting lodge for King Charles the 2nd.”
