As a museum of “stuff the empire stole from the world,” this is hard to beat. It appears throughout A.S. Byatt’s novel The Children’s Book, which is set in Edwardian London and which describes the ceramics in Rooms 140-146 in luscious, sumptuous detail. The museum always has that former empire vibe for me. The scones with cream and jam are pretty great in the downstairs cafe, which also feels very E.M. Forster. If you know a member, or decide to become one, you also get access to an amazing secret cafe hidden at the back of the glass collection.

South Ken is bursting with amazing museums. The V&A is hard to beat (for grown ups). It's free to get in and on a sunny day there are few nicer places to eat than in its central courtyard. It's a 40 minute walk over Albert Bridge and through South Ken (or a 15 minute bus ride - 49 or 345).

Free entry to main exhibits which are over many floors. Lovely court yard with coffee shops and lots of seating areas. Nice restaurants. Check out the website for opening times and bookings.

The V&A as we all call it, is definitely worth a visit especially if raining!! The bus 345 and 49 will take you there.
