Panajachel Guatemala is a bustling town on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlan, located in the Guatemalan Highlands 3 hours drive from Guatemala City. It is the busiest and most touristy of all the villages on Lake Atitlan, and the most common place for visitors to get their introduction to “The Most Beautiful Lake in the World”. Even though it is a relatively small place in the scheme of cities, it feels much larger because of the number of tourists. With a population of around 15,000 it is the second-largest town on Lake Atitlan, just ahead of San Pedro la Laguna and behind only Santiago Atitlan.

The main town in Lake Atitlan, Panajachel is the first town you will encounter when you drive in, Panajachel is one of the busiest towns in the lake. Its main street, Calle Santander, is full of small shops, restaurants, bars, street vendors, and more. This is a great place to buy any essential items, go grocery shopping, and even change some money. In Panajachel there is also a public dock from which boats depart to different towns around the lake every day. If you are departing on a public shuttle/bus to other parts of Guatemala it would most likely be from Panajachel.

Panajachel, also known as Pana, is a charming city located on the shores of Lake Atitlán, in the department of Sololá. The atmosphere is impressive for its beauty, and the people who are very cordial. Because of its climate and tranquility, it makes it a perfect place to relax. It offers natural reserves, diversity of restaurants, nightlife, craft market and Spanish schools. Panajachel offers a spectacular view of the San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán volcanoes. It is a starting point, by boat, to visit the different municipalities of Santiago Atitlán, San Lucas Tolimán, San Antonio Palopó, Santa Catarina Palopó, and San Pedro La Laguna, among others. Many of the inhabitants of these towns are descendants of the Cakchiquel and Tzutuhil groups. Santander Street is among other points of interest in Panajachel. The street has become a point of reference where you can find a variety of handicrafts, restaurants, hotels, and other services that make the destination a pleasant experience. You cannot miss the Church of San Francisco, which shows the richness of the imagery; the local market, where villagers sell their agricultural products; and the museums and nature reserves.

Many food and shopping items can be found in San Marcos at the various grocery stores and markets but for everything else a boat ride across the lake to Panajachel will expand the options greatly.

Panajachel is one of the most built-up places on the lake and can often be rather rowdy, but it's still definitely worth a visit. It has the best sunsets, the best nightlife and easily the best market, so if you're looking to stock up on beautiful Mayan clothes and textiles, this place is a must.
