The amphitheater at Siena's Fortezza Medicea hosts open-air cinema in summer. It's wonderfully romantic and the films are often great classics. Just take warm clothes - even in mid-summer it's chilly up there.

“Piazza del Duomo. The candy-striped façade of this spectacular Gothic cathedral was largely the work of Giovanni Pisano in the 1300s, who added many of the statues of saints, prophets and pagan philosophers on its three great portals. The interior is equally striking with intricate marble floors, ornately carved pulpit, gilded dome and black-and-white striping throughout.”

“After having deeply thought at which was my favorite place in Siena, I believe that Santa Maria della Scala is. I feel the immense importance of the philosophy of hospitality, that led our ancestors to create this ponderous architectural system, used since centuries also as city hospital. Nowadays it has been turned into an amazing museum hosting different events and shows.”

“St Catherine once lived here with her parents and 24 siblings (locals joke her mother must have been a saint too). Now a pilgrimage site overseen by nuns of the Benedictine order, the home's original kitchen and sleeping area were frescoed and converted into chapels in the 15th century. The larger Chiesa del Crocifisso (closed between 12.30pm and 3pm) was added in the 17th century. The downstairs Orotorio della Camera includes the saint's untouched, nearly bare cell.”
