Take a windy steep drive up to Kantara Castle which served as a watch tower for Pirate raids and during it's long history was taken by Richard the Lionheart who subsequently sold it to the Knights Templar. The stunning coastal path and through Kaplica village leads to the Castle and on a clear day…

Kantara Castle is a great hike and has amazing views of the island. Small castle and usually you might be the only people up there!

“Stone Castle Restaurant, located beautifully on the shores of Esentepe, right by the sea, is a popular restaurant for expats as well as locals. The restaurant resembles a small stone castle, hence the name. You can easily spend an entire Sunday afternoon here with the family. It is very genuine and cosy and also a great venue for festivities. Sit outside in the summer time and enjoy the beautiful sunsets the northern east coast has to offer and inside during the colder winter months, with the warming open fire. The staff is pleasant and helpful and the menu is extensive with something for everyone. Welcome to dine with beautiful mountain views and breathtaking sunsets.”

“Rizokarpaso (Turkish: Dipkarpaz) is a town on the Karpas Peninsula in the northeastern part of Cyprus. While nominally part of the Famagusta District, it has been under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus since the partition of the island in 1974. Rizokarpaso is one of the largest towns on the peninsula. Soil near the town consists of terra fusca which is very fertile. Local crops include carob, cotton, tobacco, and grain. The town's surroundings are famous as the wildest and one of the most unspoilt parts of the island. The municipality's territory features the Karpaz National Park, home to the Karpass donkey and some of the finest beaches of the island.”

“To the north east of North Cyprus lies the 'Panhandle', or Karpas Peninsula. Alternatively spelled Karpaz, the region stretches from near Famagusta to the northern-most tip of Cyprus. The Karpas covers a substantial part of the island and extends to 80 kilometres in length and up to 20 in width. One of the most unspoiled places anywhere in the whole of the Mediterranean region, the Karpas is home to an outstanding number of birds and its northern and eastern shores have some of the most beautiful and deserted beaches in North Cyprus - in fact in the whole of the island. The Karpas region is rich in subterranean water reservoirs, so crops including fruit, olives and tobacco are grown in abundance, although in many of the small villages dotted around the region a tractor is still a novelty and many jobs still rely on traditional horse-drawn tools. The other main source of income for the region now is fishing, with the villages of Bogaz and Kumyali being the main centres for fishing in the Karpas. During the 20th century, some mining was carried out along parts of the Karpas, which are rich in various minerals, but these mines closed long ago and little evidence of this industry remains today apart from a few deserted buildings. ”
