Stone circles and henge. Recognised as a World Heritage Site for it's outstanding Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape, Avebury is a place where you can connect with history and take time to imagine what life might have been like thousands of years ago.
A lesser known ancient site - in many ways more intimate than Stonehenge. If you are planning on visiting Marlborough this is the perfect stop off point to stretch the legs and explore this ancient site.
Avebury is the largest stone circle in the world and is the only place in the world where you’ll find a pub and a chapel inside a stone circle! Here you can walk among the stones.
Avebury Stones are a prehistoric marvel. Take the A4 east but ignore the first sign for Avebury; the next left takes you past the magnificent "Avenue" of standing stones leading to the village.
Avebury a 35 min drive but is well worth it, you can walk around and touch the stone circle unlike stone henge, it is a unique and spiritual place, there is also a fantastic museum and interactive house and gardens, along with pubs and cafes, highly recommended.
About 1/2 hour drive from the cottage, just beyond Marlborough is the World Heritage Unesco site of Avebury. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. Similar and not far from the renowned Stonehenge, I find this site…

“The 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in 2 miles (72 m in 3.2 km) or a 1 in 44 gradient. The locks come in three groups: the lower seven locks, Foxhangers Wharf Lock to Foxhangers Bridge Lock, are spread over 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km); the next sixteen locks form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside and are designated as a scheduled monument. Because of the steepness of the terrain, the pounds between these locks are very short. As a result, fifteen of them have unusually large sideways-extended pounds, to store the water needed to operate them. A final six locks take the canal into Devizes. The locks take 5–6 hours to traverse in a boat.”

“The White horse is a hill figure on Cherhill Down, 3.5 miles from Calne. It dates from the late 18th Century and is the third oldest of several White Horses in England. Near the White Horse is the Lansdowne Monument. erected in 1845 by the 3rd Marquess of Landsdowne to commemorate his ancestor Sir William Petty. You can walk up to both and see also the Oldbury Castle Hillfort.”
