Park for walking or biking

Arlington is full of man-made wonders, but sometimes it’s nice to let Mother Nature do the work instead. Head to the 1,300-acre River Legacy Parks on the northern edge of the city. It truly is an urban oasis with opportunities for paddling, biking, or nature tours. Get the whole family outdoors with a paddling excursion on the Trinity River. Visit riverlegacy. org for a list of outfitters and enjoy a leisurely float with panoramic views. While away, spend a few hours navigating the Trinity River Paddling Trail for its whole eight miles, or try a two-mile route. Up for a family bike ride? There are more than eight miles of paved hike-and- bike trails through the park’s thick greenbelt of elms and oaks. Check the calendar for guided nature tours, especially nighttime programs that let you see bats, owls, and other nocturnal residents. The River Legacy Living Science Center, an interactive indoor nature center, has hands-on exhibits, aquariums, and terrariums that entertain while they educate. If you’ve brought your canine family members to Arlington, check out the seven-acre Rush Creek Dog Park, west of downtown. There are four fenced-in areas plus water fountains and wash stations, and shaded seating for humans. The whole family can exercise together at nearby Rush Creek Linear Park, with 2.5 miles of dog- friendly trails. Arlington.org
