This is a walkway from the far end of the lighthouse road, while steep at times, this track offers spectacular views. Access is cut off to the track for a few hours either side of high tide so don’t start the walk on an incoming tide.

Description Two tracks lead from the car park: The main track to the Tutukaka lighthouse A short walk that drops down the south side of the headland The track to the Tutukaka lighthouse runs along the top of a headland, through pohutukawa planted in recent years by the community. Stairs lead you down onto the rocks. Follow the old lighthouse power-poles to where the track recommences on Kukutauwhao Island (maintained by the Whangarei District Council). Kukutauwhao is only an island at high tide because of a deep gut, which fills with water. Crossing this is difficult around high tide or in rough conditions. On Kukutauwhao Island the track runs along the left hand side of the headland providing great views of the surrounding northward coastline. The track then deviates into the middle of the headland and travels up through bush consisting mainly of cabbage trees, flax and manuka. After a final short climb, the track finishes at the Tutukaka lighthouse on the end of the headland with steep cliffs, where outstanding views reward your efforts. Getting there Access to the reserve at the north head of Tutukaka Harbour is via a right of way, which is sign posted off Matapouri Road 400 m

A fun walk that takes you to a nice beach and then up a hall to the light house with views over the surrounding bays. About a 30min walk.

Walking Time: to the Lighthouse 1 hour return Important: choose an hour either side of low tide for this walk (weather permitting), good shoes recommended. Access/Carparking: Access to the car park and reserve is 600m north past Marina Road, Tutukaka via the Private Road (blue signage) and from there follow signs. Directions: A grassy track follows the headland out across the reserve where native trees have been planted by local school-children. Seating is provided in several spots; there are views to the left of the track of the Poor Knights Islands. The descent to the beach is a stepped and well maintained path, leading to a rocky/pebbly causeway across to Kukutauwhao Island. You can reach this beach whatever the tide is doing, but low tide is best to cross the causeway and follow the well marked track which climbs up the side of the island to the lighthouse, and great coastal views. The return via the causeway gives you the opportunity to explore some of the nooks and inlet beaches which stretch to the right of the track before returning to the grassy reserve.
