Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devils Postpile National Monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its' columns tower up to 60 feet and display a striking symmetry.

If you get to the security gate by 7am (or maybe by 7:15am), you can get in for free and while driving your own car; otherwise take the shuttle. This place is closed during the winter. It's an easy hike (even for my 5-year-old child and 87-year-old arthritic mother) and definitely worth seeing. It gets very cold in the morning since it's shaded. Temperature will run in the 40's and 50's even in July, so be sure to wear a thick jacket. Go to both the top and the bottom of the postpile. Be very careful when you're on top of the postpile because it's not fenced (watch the kids carefully).

Amazing geology, gorgeous walks. Not accessible in winter. In summer you may have to take a shuttle as they limit auto traffic.

Located in beautiful Red's Meadow just off of the Pacific Crest Trail. Near Rainbow falls and other hiking trails within the Ansel Adams and John Muir Forests.
