Originally used for avoiding prohibition laws, these underground tunnels became basement speakeasies. Often these speakeasies had innocuous storefronts which belied what lay beneath and the patrons were able to keep on being merry. These underground tunnels still exist today forming part of LA's abandoned underground subway system. They are not easily accessible; in order to get access, one must find the elevator behind the Hall of Records on Temple Street. Officially these aren't open to the public, but visitors still find a way of exploring these historic tunnels. The LA underground system has a number of underground service tunnels and passageways which are accessible from 500 W Temple.
