Tintern Abbey is a national icon – still standing in roofless splendour on the banks of the River Wye nearly 500 years since its tragic fall from grace. It was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks.

A spectacular abbey, a bit of a drive but a lovely drive following the river, good pub next door, those monks knew what they were they doing!

“Chepstow Castle at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Located above cliffs on the River Wye, construction began in 1067 under the instruction of the Norman Lord William FitzOsbern. Originally known as Striguil, it was the southernmost of a chain of castles built in the Welsh Marches, and with its attached lordship took the name of the adjoining market town in about the 14th century. A lovely location for picnics and to walk around.”

“using the village footbridge, you can walk over to The Boat Inn, taking in the wonderful views on the way. If you would prefer to drive the journey is around 20 minutes. It has a magical tiered garden, leading up to a waterfall. They serve locally produced ales and ciders out of the barrel, and also offer local mead and spirits and is famous on the Wye Valley walking route as the perfect place to stop for a ‘pick me up’. The food served is homemade and locally sourced. It has wood fires and is cosy in the winter – family and dog friendly. ”

“Underneath the mysterious Royal Forest of Dean lies something spectacular and unseen, an unfathomable natural cave system that has been mined for more than 4,500 years. This warren of caves are fantastic to explore, learning all about the free-miners of the Forest of Dean, as well as the natural caves themselves. Special experience events are available such as candlelight tours and party nights. Deep caving experiences are also available for the brave. ”
