Galatina is a small town in the heart of Salento, it is not among the most known but I recommend you take a tour because it hides the unprecedented beauty. If you are here you absolutely must visit the Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria; also don't miss the beautiful old town and the Chiesa Madre di San Pietro e Paolo.

Beautiful Old Town. Don't miss: -The late Romanesque church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, built in 1390 by Raimondello del Balzo Orsini, count of Soleto, with a fine portal and rose window. The interior contains frescoes by Francesco d'Arezzo (1435). The apse contains the fine mausoleum of the son of the founder, a canopy supported by four columns, with his statue beneath it. -The Baroque church of St. Peter (also known as Mother Church), rebuilt from 1633 on a previous Greek-rite edifice. -The Pupa, a fountain in local limestone -In the neighbourhood is the small church of St. Paul. It houses a pump which, according to tradition, was able to heal people bitten by poisonous tarantulas (those bitten are called tarantati or pizzicati in the local dialect).

This old town has 5 city gates, of which three can be seen with all their symbols in the various access points of the old town embraced by walls: Porta Luce, near the church of Our Lady of the Light , bearing the coat of arms of the city , Porta San Pietro ( which locals call Porta Nuova) and Porta dei Cappuccini, from where came the monks from a monastery nearby. In the historical center, several glimpses of past and present life to enjoy by walking. Have a look at the “Sedile” of the fifteenth century , made of local stone and to the “chart” engraved, showing the ancient laws that governed the city .

has a beautiful story regarding the origins of the taranta! And if you pass by there of course you will also have to enter the church of Santa Caterina, which is beautiful.
