The Church of St. Michael de Rupe (St. Michael of the Rock), Brentor, is perhaps the most striking English example of a church on a height. Today, the church receives several thousand visitors each year. There is a magnificent view from the churchyard in clear weather, with bleak Dartmoor to the east, Plymouth Sound and Whitsand Bay to the south, the Tamar Valley and Bodmin Moor to the west, and the heights of Exmoor just visible in clear weather to the north. Even when the thick moorland fogs descend, this is an eerily beautiful place, as the wind whips shreds of cloud past the hill. The church stands 1,110 feet above sea level on an ancient, extinct, volcanic cone.

A lovely church on top of a tor with views down to the sea and across Dartmoor.

The Parish of Brent Tor is based around the villages of North and South Brentor, West Blackdown and Liddaton. Brent Tor has two churches – the official Parish Church is St Michael de Rupe, an iconic 12th century church on top of the Tor; and Christ Church, in the village of North Brentor.

The Church of St Michel de Rupe ("Saint Michael of the Rock") atop the Tor dates to the 13th century, and measures 15 feet (4.6 m) wide and 37 feet (11 m) long. The tower is 40 feet (12 m) high and houses five bells. At one point, the Church may have been used as a Beacon tower, used to spread word of enemies seen out to sea (Spanish Armada). It is also said that the church was to be built at the bottom of the tor, but the devil who didn't want to see its construction would move the construction to the top of the hill each night to stop its construction. Dissuaded by the devil, the locals continued with its construction in defiance.

A short but uphill walk takes you from the car park up to the church, from where you will have a breathtaking 360 view of Devon and Cornwall (see guidebook cover photo taken by me!) The church, which still holds regular services is always open, so worth a look inside before the fun descent
