I highly recommend that you take the guided tour. Not only will you learn fun facts from Jeff who is an incredibly knowledgeable guide that has worked at the Meteor Crater for years. It is also important to note that going on the guided rim tour is the only way you can access certain view points from the other side of the crater. The guided rim tour is about a 1 mile trek round trip, however it is on a paved path, and allots time for picture taking. If you’re a planner, you can always call ahead to find out what times the tours are being held the day of your visit to make the most of your time there, as the whole tour takes about 45 minutes. It is definitely worth the time
