This maritime fort is at the mouth of the river, defending the harbour and former anchorage from pirates attacks. It dates to the end of the 17th century and is one of a line of forts, redoubts and batteries erected in the wake of the Portuguese Restoration War, which raged for almost 30 years between Portugal and Spain. This building is from a time of sophisticated artillery, so has a low profile and not much decoration. But to enter you have to cross a drawbridge, and there’s an endearing chapel inside with period tiles. The roof has bartizans at each corner, and there are views of the rocky coast to the south and Meia Praia on the other side of the river.

Lagos Fortress. This petite fortress at the southern end of the avenue was built in the 17th century to protect the port. Now restored, it houses an exibition on the Portuguese discoveries and a chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara, often invoked as a protector against storms.

Also called the 'Fort of the Flag' is a maritime fortification of the XVII century. One enters the Fort by a drawbridge and through its gate of arms with stonework. Inside there is a chapel, lined with tiles. It is worth a visit to look at the bay of Lagos. Next door is the beautiful Batata Beach and the lighthouse at the mouth of the river. A little above the Batata Beach, and climbing the stairs, we have access to a magnificent Viewpoint, where is the Statue of the Patron of Lagos, 'São Gonçalo' and where you can appreciate even more of the beauty of the great Bay of Lagos. A must visit in Lagos.
