I would recommend daytime visitation to the Historic Irving downtown district then going to Historic Downtown Grapevine, TX for dining and entertainment.

This is likely one of the best kept secrets in the metroplex as there are good eats, wineries, shops and a host of fun boutiques in the vicinity of a real local main street. The downtown train for kids is very popular and they have a amazing show during Christmas.
