Luton’s Midland Road station arrived in 1867, built by what was then the Midland Railway to serve a population that had exploded in the 19th century – thanks largely to the town’s thriving hatmaking and newspaper printing industries. At the turn of the 20th century, engineering and manufacturing came to dominate, with Vauxhall Motors opening up a plant in 1905. While the products changed, the growth continued – Luton station was completely rebuilt in 1937, and got a new fourth platform in 1960, followed by a fifth in the 1980s.
