This strenuous 4.7-mile hike starts off leading up a staircase of petrified lava along part of Fatman’s Loop trail, ending at Mount Elden’s summit. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Flagstaff and the surrounding area, plus close-up views of the mountain's geology. The lower part passes through a mixed pinyon-juniper woodland and ponderosa pine forest changing to mixed conifers higher up. An especially interesting tree is the Alligator Juniper. Elden Lookout Trail connects to Oldham Trail at the top making an extended hike possible.
