Castell Coch (Red Castle), C15 7JS; is a 30 minute drive away, or a mile from Taffs Well Station. One of Wales’ most visited castles, Castell Coch is a protected Grade 1 listed building. Situated in the Fforest Fawr, there are waymarked walking trails, castle tours and a cafe. www.cadw.gov.wales

Castell Coch is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081 to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge.

This fairy tale castell rises up from the ancient woods of Fforest Fawr. Given free reign by the Marquis of Bute, architect William Burges didn;t hold back! The highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings of Castell Coch make it well worth a visit.
