Walk the trail yourself (from the Bunker Hill Monument to Boston Common) rather than going on a guided tour. There are plenty of historical placards at each site.

This free self-guided walking tour of downtown and Charleston historic sites is a great way to introduce yourself to the city. High points are the Paul Revere House and the USS Constitution in the Charleston Navy Yard. You can also rent audio tour gear or have a guided tour as well by checking in at the Boston Common.
