The tower was named by the Pope, and later renamed Moro probably in relation to that of Raffaele di Sante called “the Moor”(which gave its name to the district and the building beside the tower). The tower stands in the heart of the city and is open internally. Its stairs lead to a spectacular terrace, where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

In 1527, in the day following the sacking of Rome, Pope Clement VII took refuge in Orvieto. To provision with water the Albornoz fortress in case of siege or conflict, this well was built, based on a plan of Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. The St. Patrick well, completed in 1537, is 62 metres deep and, at the inside, two double-spiralled stairwells were made, planned for easier transportation of water.

Day Trips Itineraries By Car

Wonderful places around Orvieto can be reached and visited in 1 day
From Orvieto take Amerina Road following the signs for Perugia/Todi. The drive is particularly interesting in terms of scenery, especially the stretch along the Corbara Lake, which is followed by the Tiber river into Gole del Forello. If you wish, from here you can also make a brief stop in the village of Civitella del Lago, with a small historic town center and the Museo dell’Ovo Pinto. If you don’t stop, continue straight following signs towards Todi. In Todi you can visit the Santuario della Consolazione, the Duomo and the close villages of Montecastello di Vibio (with the “smallest theatre in the world”) and Montenero with the old castle.

From the city of Orvieto take the SS Cassia Montefiascone-Viterbo. Driving through the Lazio countryside, you will cross through Montefiascone. It is worth a stop to see the cathedral and the beautiful fortress Rocca dei Papi, where you can enjoy amazing views of Bolsena Lake. Viterbo is another 15 minute drive from Montefiascone. Viterbo is a city full of attractions: the old part of the medieval quarters of Piano Scarano and San Pellegrino, the home of Santa Rosa and a beautiful Palazzo Papale. It is worth bringing a bathing suit and visiting Terme dei Papi. It is a natural hot sulfur spring right outside of the city. The public area is Bullicame, which is sprinkled with natural pools. Not far from Viterbo, we suggest to visit the Villa Lante in Bagnaia.

About an hour from Orvieto, just outside the city of Terni you will find the famous Marmore waterfalls (of Roman origin), generated by the jump of the Velino river to the underlying Nera river. The jump of about 170 meters of Velino makes it the highest waterfall in Europe. The green area around the waterfall is equipped with five different routes of varying dificulty. They allow you to walk side by side with the water, offering panoramic evocative views. For sports lovers the most extreme rafting starts right from the foot of the waterfall and continues the path of the river.

Civita di Bagnoregio is also known as the dying town. Perched on a tuffaceous hill in the middle of a landslide-prone valley, this nice little town is slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. It was once a thriving town, built by the Etruscan to protect a road leading from Lake Bolsena to the north across the Tiber valley. Rebuilt in the Middle Ages, Bagnoregio became an important centre with churches, hospices and homes of illustrious families.
