Topeka's zoo is in Gage Park, as well as a lovely rose garden, a train, and the Helen Hocker Theater, which has shows put on by young people. There is also a great swimming pool and an old fashioned carousel.

The zoo is small enough to see it in an hour or two. The animals are varied and well taken care of. In December the Zoo lights are a must see. Scroll through the pictures to see an example.

Shopping
Dillons grocery store and Walmart are across the street from each other. North Topeka Blvd, which is on the way, has lots of fast food restaurants, a Walgreens, a Genesis gym, post office, hardware stores. I do most of my shopping in North Topeka because it's easy access from my house.

It's a fun place for children and completely kid friendly. Adults are not allowed unless accompanied by a child. My granddaughters gave it an A+ when they visited a few years ago. I have been there with 6 small children and only 2 adults. The kids loved it and I was impressed with the built-in safety.

The Capitol building is beautiful inside. The ONLY point of entry is through the visitors' center off 8TH ST. AT HARRISON. The second floor features the House Chamber and a larger than life mural depicting John Brown, a historic figure in the fight between pro-slavery proponents and abolitionists. The Senate meets on the third floor. Weather permitting you can go to the top of the dome observation area.

Downtown Kansas Ave south of the river has been revitalized, with numerous pocket parks along the sidewalks. I enjoy walking from 6th to 10th Streets and back, to enjoy them. There is some shopping and good restaurants or coffee shops. Hazel Hill Chocolates is also there.

This station was moved in from a small town, has all the items which would have been in it originally. It is typical of train depots in small towns,
