Fantastic family Italian restaurant with a menu to suit all pockets and tastes. We love this place. They have a Happy Hour menu mid-week where you can get two main meals of pizza or pasta for the price of one. Usually between 5.30pm and 7pm.

An absolute hidden treasure! Wonderful tapas, home cooked by this Greek family. A lovely, warm atmosphere with excellent service. It doesn't even matter if you're a couple alone in this place - you just feel welcome and looked-after and it's small enough not to feel like you're in a large empty room. Recently renovated. A really lovely local pub just a few minutes walk from my home. Great ales and wines and roaring fires in the winter. Also food served although I haven't tried the food yet. Let me know if it's good to eat there please!

A great pub which also does food. Guaranteed to be busy during 'drinking hours' (after work and lunchtimes in tourist season). Loads of different places to sit and a genuinely old building complete with wonky staircases and a rabbit-warren feel upstairs. Lovely beer and, although I haven't eaten there myself yet, I have heard from other guests that the menu is great, including Sunday lunch.

An absolutely stunning English stately home. Take the 181 bus from Station Avenue or Stonebow (here's the timetable http://getdown.org.uk/bus/bus/181.shtml) which takes around an hour. Please note that only the gardens are open in winter but the main house opens to the public again on March 24th 2018.
A glory. Pure and Simple. You'll have to pay extra to walk up the tower but it's worth it if you're feeling up to the 275 steps - you can even see your room from there if you know what to look for!

Just take a stroll around the river between bridges. The further out of the city you get the greener it gets. Or just find a pub by the river and watch the world go by. There are also cruises you can take from Museum Gardens and Kings Staithe.

Hang out in the park for a picnic - the Yorkshire Museum is also here as well as the remains of a monestary. The park is s also next to the river on one side so you can stroll down there too:)

I love this shop! Angus, the owner, designs many of the quirky items he sells himself. Excellent quality, unique homeware, gifts and small furniture. Also a great selection of unusual (and many very funny) cards and books.

Totally independent with a wide range of contemporary fiction including the well known and the successfully local., as well as biographies, history, kids books etc etc Something for everyone. If you're here for a couple of days and they don't immediately have what you want, they can probably get it for you before you leave. I can't praise the staff highly enough either - so friendly and knowledgable.
