Arts & Culture

I went to the concert hall, which is quite large and has nice acoustics. The design inside is simple but elegant and of course the service from the ushers is faultless.

Kishimojin Shrine is a small, but very old shrine hidden in a quiet residential area near Ikebukuro and Waseda. Architecturally, it is not the most magnificent structure, but there is a huge ginkyo tree in front of the shrine which is beautiful in autumn. The small candy / toy store has been operating at the same site for generations and is worth a visit. Also, the tree lined shopping street in front of the shrine is worth a stroll. In terms of transportation, the shrine is accessible from the Fukutoshin Line, but definitely recommend to take the Arakawa tram line, Tokyo's last remaining tram line.

Parks & Nature

This strolling, mountain and pond-style garden was created based on the theme of Waka poetry in the 15th year of the Genroku Period (1702) by the shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi's trusted confidante Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu. This garden is a typical example of the famous gardens of Edo Period. In the Meiji Period, this garden became a second residence of the founder of Mitsubishi, Iwasaki Yataro. Later, in the 13th year of Showa (1938), the Iwasaki family donated this garden to the City of Tokyo, and in Showa 28 (1953) it was designated as a special site of exceptional beauty and an important cultural asset.

This is a nice garden and English-style home. It is easy to reach by JR train from the Tokyo station. I can imagine that it is fantastic during rose season and azalea season. They roses are now out bloom and the caretakers were deadheading all blooms that were left. There is a peaceful walk around a tradition Japanese lake with nice sculpture. You can walk from this garden to Rikugien in about 15 minutes. This is a good place to start. There are many maples so it will be good in the next month. I really enjoyed my morning walk here and it relaxed me.
