This is a neat tiny restaurant in the back of a small grocery and "general store." Food offering vary depending on what's in season, local maple syrup, and what the chef feels like fixing! There are sometimes local crafts, and you can also grab a sandwich or light lunch from the refrigerated case to go - for your picnic or day's adventure. If you are leaf peeping in Highland County (go thru the Blue Grass Valley), or on the way to Snowshoe, Cass or Greenbank Observatory, this is a good stop.

59 Spruce StThis is a beautiful cider tasting room in nearby Monterey VA. The cider is wonderful. Buy some bottles to bring back to Loafer's Glory! Big Fish is one block off the main street in Monterey. There are shops, restaurants there.
Have a zip line adventure, or go rock climbing. There is a via ferrata course where you are safely hooked in for climbing with cables. Great for picnics, too.

In the Fall, you MUST drive thru the Blue Grass Valley to look at the gorgeous leaves. Stop at the Blue Grass Mercantile in Blue Grass for a sandwich, soup, etc for lunch. Eat there on the bench outside, or take a picnic lunch away. There are local gifts and crafts (usually) in the store as well. This is a fabulous motorcycling area. Your host, Jeff, can give you info.

Ok, I was skeptical before I went the first time since I am not "into" science. This is a really cool place, and has been a hit with our guests, especially families, for many years. 155 Observatory RdOk, I was skeptical before I went the first time since I am not "into" science. This is a really cool place, and has been a hit with our guests, especially families, for many years. There is a science exhibit hall, auditorium where a brief INTERESTING info presentation is given about the telescopes, then a tour into the facility to see some of the largest telescopes in the works. There is a hiking trail here to go to the top of Seneca Rocks. Great for a picnic! Fairly steep and challenging. There is a small beach area / river access to the N of the parking lot. Restrooms here, plus an historic homestead with interpreters (most of the year).

Bring some inner tubes (we might have some you can borrow) and a picnic. We will advise on where to put your tube in at Smoke Hole / Big Bend. You can float around an ox bow on the river, and take out right back by your car. It's an easy, fun, relaxing, cheap way to entertain the kids on a hot day.
