The beautiful monastery of Arkadi can be found in the foothills of the western Ida (Psiloritis) Mountain. The Cretans consider the monastery as a symbol of freedom from the turks. During the revolt in 1866, hundreds of refugees and Cretan freedom fighters sought sanctuary in the wine store rooms with the monks, where there was also a stash of gunpowder. When the Turks made their way towards their last refuge, the Abbot gave the order to fire the gunpowder. Hundreds of Cretans and Turks were killed; giving real meaning to the battle cry of Crete - “freedom or death”! November 8th is a day of celebrations in Arkadi and Rethymno.

The sandy beach of Skaleta is a part of vast beachfront coastline of East Rethymnon and it's located 2 km away from the Villa. During summer nights, from May to September, Caretta caretta sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand of the Gulf. So, it is usual to see small parts of beach being blocked and not accessible by visitors. The surrounding area has developed in the recent years, providing a variety touristic amenities, restaurants, cafes and sun beds.
