Secret tip: It might not be hip and trendy but this is where you will meet the real locals, have an "uitsmijter", for the kids get a slice of bread (yes, literally) with peanut butter or jam, Dutch pea soup, unlimited percolated coffee, all at lubriciously low prices. Oh, and genuine Amsterdam hospitality. Wondering what that means? Just go take a peak.

Try bitterballen, kaasstengels, osseworst, leverworst and mature cheese, There are only locals here, the bar-staff is very friendly and this is the place to be if you want to chat to a real Amsterdammer.

Try bitterballen, kaasstengels, osseworst, leverworst and mature cheese, There are only locals here, the bar-staff is very friendly and this is the place to be if you want to chat to a real Amsterdammer.

this is a great museum for kids and adults. It shows the history of Amsterdam and for the kids there's an interactive orphanage with a mouse as guide, dressing up clothes, activities and so on. It's our daughter's favourite (till age 7ish)

92 Kalverstraatthis is a great museum for kids and adults. It shows the history of Amsterdam and for the kids there's an interactive orphanage with a mouse as guide, dressing up clothes, activities and so on. It's our daughter's favourite (till age 7ish)

Small but very beautifully landscaped in parts. The central field is very spacious. Good for a bit of fresh-air, Lots of dog-walking here, Sit down next to a dog-owner and you will get into a conversation, guaranteed. In the summer there are lots of music festivals here. But don't worry you won't hear them in the apartment.

A large, quieter alternative to the Vondelpark. This is the place to go for space and a bit of quiet or for a decent run. There's a children's nature-playground called 't landje as well.
