Food Scene

Come 16:00 every day, Georgetown’s Lorong Baru closes down to vehicular traffic, with cars required to find alternate routes to their destination because the street turns into a thriving outdoor hawker food centre. Hawkers furiously fry up their specialties which include char kway teow (flat rice noodles with cockles, prawns, chilli and bean sprouts) and chee cheong fun (rice noodle rolls). Expect to sit on colourful plastic tables and chairs on the roadside.

This one is a real gem! The garden of orchids, fish pond and general ambience is stunning. If you're visiting Ferringhi Beach and want a special night out, this is the place to go. Lots of food options but seafood is the definite recommendation. Open from lunch till late, price of food is on the higher side if you compare with the price of an average meal in Penang but definitely worth a visit or two!

About 700 metres away north of Ferringhi Heights, you'll find a large open plan building with plenty of tables. Its a great place to eat and enjoy the sea breeze. Its nothing fancy but the great selling point is the selection of hawker style food all in one place. Chinese, Indian, Japanese and seafood cuisine! You'll also find a great selected of local beers. After food, we recommend a nice stroll along the beach to work off those calories!

Just a short 400 metre walk away you'll find a quaint little bar and grill with a cafe. A great selection of wines, western cuisine and desserts. Our favourite, the Warm Apple Crumble – RM19.99, cooked apple in cinnamon, vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate cream to be just the right size and the right kind of sweetness . Full disclosure, one of us has a sweet tooth :)

Drinks & Nightlife

Café Bar & Gallery is a restaurant and bar combo set along Jalan Batu Ferringhi. Unpretentious and casual, it is divided into an indoor space and al fresco section, and features a garden-theme with lots of potted plants surrounding its metal tables and wooden chairs. We recommend ordering a cold pint and getting a small plate of the kitchen’s beef rendang, a Malay specialty of caramelised tender chunks of juicy meat seasoned with a combination of spices and served with a creamy, coconut-based curry. http://www.penang.ws/penang-top-10s/10-nightlife-batu-ferringhi.html

For those who like to enjoy a drink in short and sandals. Bora Bora by Sunset is a beachside restobar with a good selection of drinks at low prices (RM12 for a bottle of beer and RM90 for a bottle of house wine). Its atmosphere is not particularly posh – rather, a casual, laid-back spot reminiscent of a Caribbean beach bar. Stretching all the way to the coastline, it is popular for romantic interludes, with a diverse range of locals, tourists and expats as its clientele. Be prepared for impromptu dance sessions!

Sightseeing

In 2012 Penang’s municipal council hired London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic in an effort to spawn awareness of the rich history of the streets. The project was a success with Zacharevic turning certain areas into thriving tourist destinations that also became the much-talked about object of attention among locals. Take a walking tour of the Street art in Penang. You won't be disappointed :) For exact locations: http://www.tourismpenang.net.my/pdf/street-art-brochure.pdf

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Clan Jetties are unique Chinese settlements that have been around since the 19th century. Along the wooden pier are villages on stilts that house the descendants of Chinese immigrants. There are eight different clans that still reside here, with each individual jetty named after their surname. Likely the most tourist-friendly would be the Chew Jetty whose residents occupy the entire stretch of jetty. Today, these houses remain homes to a number of families , so we advise you request for permission from them before snapping photos there.

Fort Cornwallis is a star fort in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, built by the British East India Company in the late 18th century. Fort Cornwallis is the largest standing fort in Malaysia. Parks & Nature

A great day trip is to travel out to the Penang National Park (Taman Negara), located on the north-west corner of the island in Teluk Bahang. The park is easily accessed from George Town or Batu Ferringhi by public transport (RapidPenang bus) and there is a whole range of things to do for all the family. With some of the best beaches on the island located along it's shores, you can choose to travel around by boat or do some jungle trekking over the headlands and hills, where if you are lucky you will come across some of the parks wildlife, or you can just find a quiet spot for some bird watching or fishing.

Get right on top of Penang’s highest point, 821 metres above sea level, for an unparalleled view of Penang and its surroundings. From the top of Penang Hill (otherwise known as Bukit Bendera), a sprawling view of the island greets you, as far as the eyes can see, with Penang Bridge in the distance and ships in the harbour. On a clear, sunny day, you can even see right through to the other end of Penang Bridge, where it meets Peninsular Malaysia. It’s the best way to get a sweeping view of Penang. If you don’t feel like hiking all the way to the top, the dedicated funicular train service will take you there in less than 30 minutes. http://www.penang.ws/activities/georgetown.htm

For those historical buffs we recommend the Dhammikarama Burmese Temple. About 12 kms away, in Georgetown built in 1803 - this is the oldest Buddhist temple in Penang. This is a beautiful place to visit and experience the rich historical culture in Penang.

Shopping

Batu Ferringhi Night Market tops our list of best places for night time action. What makes it a great shopping option is the fact that travellers staying along the Batu Ferringhi stretch do not have to travel all the way into Georgetown for their retail fix. The only downside is that you could purchase select items (like batik-print clothes) at slightly better prices in town: our advice – bargain hard! If you like something, do not buy it at the first stall you see - have a look around, and then return only if you cannot find a better price elsewhere.
