If you have driven in to Mahaiula Bay and wouldn't mind an extra walk to get to an even better beach... continue walking north along the coast past the little red cabin. When you come to the end of the beach you'll see a trail that leads across a big lava field. Follow that trail for about 15 minutes and you'll come to Makalawena! If you go on a weekday you might be some of the only people there.

Right in front of the King Kam Marriot Hotel is a little manmade beach by the pier that's good for a quick dip. If you have a family member that's a little nervous about snorkeling this is the best introduction.

Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel

Also called "69's" by the locals, this beach is a stunner. Lots of trees for shade and fun rocks to swim out to.

Also great snorkeling here! Not much of a "beach" beach though so don't come here excited to lay out in the sand.

Gorgeous drive and fairly easy hike down to a beautiful black sand beach. Really unique part of the island. Even if you don't feel like doing the hike it's worth it to drive to the lookout and see the valley. I always recommend driving the Kohala Mountain Road on the way there (up and over the mountain) then on the way back driving the coastal road. And the coastal road will take you right to Kohala Burger and Taco ;)

폴로루 밸리 전망대
52-5100 Akoni Pule HwyGorgeous drive and fairly easy hike down to a beautiful black sand beach. Really unique part of the island. Even if you don't feel like doing the hike it's worth it to drive to the lookout and see the valley. I always recommend driving the Kohala Mountain Road on the way there (up and over the mountain) then on the way back driving the coastal road. And the coastal road will take you right to Kohala Burger and Taco ;)
Absolutely beautiful part of the island... if you have a 4x4 vehicle I recommend driving down (only if you're comfortable doing so... the road is terribly steep) and driving to the back of the valley to see the 1,200 ft waterfall.

This is a short little hike that can be done in 30 minutes. Also great for trail running if it's not too muddy. A really cool climate to experience, the farther up in elevation you go the more it feels like a jungle-y cloud forest.

Really unique beach but tough to get to. If you have a 4x4 vehicle and are comfortable driving a rougher road then I'd say drive in. If that is not the case then we usually pay the locals $20 a person for roundtrip transportation. Usually in old trucks or ATV's which is half the fun.
