We believe there’s nothing more important than taking time to dine well with family and friends in a beautiful space. And we have a passion for all things Bluegrass - curing our meats in-house, supporting the region’s diverse farming and food community, and keeping a local-first mindset in everything we do. Epping’s is located in a renovated historic building that once held Epping Bottling Works, home to the hustle and spirit of local entrepreneur John G. Epping. Today, we are proud to honor that history and be part of the energy of downtown Lexington’s Warehouse Block.

We believe in honoring history and chose to set our restaurant in a restored historic landmark in downtown Lexington.
Built originally before the Civil War and completely remodeled in 1936 by the Cal Milam family, the Merrick Inn served as the Manor House for one of Lexington’s finest horse farms. It was here, at Merrick Place, that Cal Milam and his groom, Mr. Johnson, trained the fabled "Exterminator," Kentucky Derby winner of 1918. Here also, Tut Tut, who won every race he entered as a two-year-old in 1920; and Komuraski, Commodore, Brown Wisdom, Miss Joy, Milkmaid, McKee, (winner of the National Stallion Stakes), and Dust Flower, who defeated Cartoonist and Messenger in the 1922 Flashstakes, started on their paths to fame and fortune. None of these thoroughbreds, however, gained such widespread fame as Merrick himself. Merrick finished in the money 157 times, winning 62 races. Merrick became a member of the Milam family, not only because of his success at the races, but also because he was "worthy in deeds and noble in character" - a tribute to him etched by the Milams on his gravestone located in the shady circle just in front of the Inn. Merrick died in 1941 at the age of 38, the oldest of all thoroughbreds. Merrick was truly a very special horse and his namesake a very special farm. We have been offering our guests the finest in traditional southern cuisine and personal service by our amazing staff for more than 43 years. Times have changed, but we believe the beauty and charm of our Inn have been enhanced by the years of offering many good people the best of Kentucky traditions. Thank you for dining with us.

Popular Italian dishes will be reinvented with elegant presentation. ItalX’s bar program offers extensive Italian wines from all regions of ‘the Boot’ and an inventive cocktail list, backed by house-made ingredients and Italian liqueurs. The restaurant wraps around the northwest corner of Main and Upper Streets diagonally overlooking the historic Courthouse and is across from 21C. The restaurant's interior are inspired by the laid-back luxury of Italy and its viticulture, shown through the wine color directing the palette. Patterned and textural design elements combine with contemporary and comfortable furnishings to create a local interpretation of a Mediterranean bistro. Sculptural lighting completes the sensory experience. The logo explores the creative shapes of Italian cuisine such as hand-made pasta while the X emphasizes the balance between masculine and feminine: delicate presentation and the regal, strong nature of the Roman numeral. The name twists its letters to capitalize on the whim of Italy’s spelling using an X instead of a Y.
