Swimming

There sure is something so special about swimming in a river! Just above the bridge here, there is a nice spot to get in the river. It's a common spot to launch kayaks and canoes, too. There is a bit of a current, so be careful... I do not recommend this swim spot for kids or elderly. If you walk downstream more, there are other places you may find suitable for swimming as well. Walking along the river, looking for spots to swim... now doesn't that sound like fun adventure on a hot day?

This is a nice, big park with plenty of sun, plenty of shade, plenty of sand, and plenty of beach front. Even though parking can be a challenge, this beach is almost always easier to get to, and less crowded than the other beaches in town.

This little-known park is one of the only places the public can access the water on Old Mission Penninsula. This is not a great park, and there is not a beach to speak of, but it is one of the most wonderful places to actually go swimming. Just cross the road from the parking lot, and walk down the stairs to the water. The water here is usually clear, and there is a wide area of water that is deep enough to swim but shallow enough to touch the sandy bottom. This is not the place to go if you are looking for an all-day beach trip; this is the place to go if you need to cool off and slow down between wineries.

This fabulous beach is no secret. In fact, it's pretty famous. There are big sand dunes all around. The water is big, too.

Hikes & Walks

If you are looking for a hike to get your heart rate up, this place is close to town and very beautiful. With a lot of elevation change, you can find great views of Grand Traverse Bay and downtown Traverse City! With 140 acres of trails, this natural area doesn't have any ridiculously long hikes. It's a popular spot for locals and visitors, so get ready to smile :)

For beautiful walks all year round, you only have to go a few blocks! From Oakdale Oasis, head north on Bates Street. Turn left on Centre (the first street you will pass). Keep walking west down Centre Street, past the sheriff station on the right, across Woodmere Avenue, and you will be able to get on the Tart Trail Loop to the left or right. This trail goes all the way around boardman lake, and is open to pedestrians and bicycles. This trail is mostly flat and well maintained.
