Look up at the bell in the tower and you'll see figures of two men ready to strike with hammers. They are commonly known as Maro and Baro or simply "zelenci" / the green ones (due to the oxidation of bronze surface) and you'll hear them strike on every full hour as well as half hour.

Dubrovnik Surroundings

Places to visit outside of City of Dubrovnik for a half-day or a full day trip.
A small coastal town 20 km south of Dubrovnik, well worth visiting for the scenic walk along the sea from one marina to the other, small caffé bars and restaurants or Cavtat's old town cemetery/mausoleum on top of a hill which offers a stunning view of the islands on the west side. A place very much loved by the locals from Dubrovnik both in winter and in summer. Reachable by local bus number 10 or a boat departing from the Old Town's port.

Ljuta is a village and a river in the hilly Konavle region where Konavoski Dvori is situated. Konavoski Dvori is actually the name of a national restaurant (which means it prepares classic Croatian dishes in traditional way - most specifically "peka", under a bell-shaped lid) located some 30 km south of Dubrovnik, pass the airport towards the border to Montenegro. The big greenery set by the river Ljuta and its old mills is a popular attraction even for locals who love to come here to spend a day in the nature. The area surrounding the river Ljuta was very important to the economy of Konavle and Dubrovnik due to its intricate mill system (watermills, flour mills, oil mills and stamp mills) - several of which are preserved until today. This area is worth visiting just for nature alone but deciding to have a meal at Konavoski Dvori Restaurant is also a good way to spend your day.

Located some 15 km north of Dubrovnik this small seaside village (with a tiny port) is the home of Arboretum Trsteno - an over 500-year-old garden owned and developed by the family of Gučetić-Gozze who had their summer residence there - the plants were brought to their garden from all across the world by merchants and seafarers. It's dated back as far as 1492 when an irrigation aqueduct was built there. Inside Arboretum you'll find a big fountain with Neptune and nymphs, a chapel, aqueduct, olive press, old sun clock as well as a belvedere pavilion overlooking the sea and Elaphiti islands. The symbol of Trsteno is a 500 year old huge plane tree that stands right next to the road leading to Arboretum making it a popular tourist attraction.

A city in the south of Pelješac penninsula with rich history due to its location. Well-worth a visit is Ston City Walls that are 5,5 km long and were built by Dubrovnik Republic after they acquired Pelješac in the 14th century. Other things to see include the historic center of Ston with its Municipal house, old entrance to Ston City Walls, church of St Blaise etc. For drinks and food you can find many small caffe bars and good restaurants (especially recommended is Konoba Bakus restaurant). Ston is especially famous for salt making - the historic salt pans that date from 14th century make it among the oldest salt pans in Europe and salt is still being produced today for industrial purposes - a 1 kg pack of Ston salt can actually be bought at Dubrovnik's local grocery stores.

Pelješac - one of Croatia's top wine regions. A must-see peninsula some 50 km northwest of Dubrovnik, worth visiting either for taking a scenic drive along the coast or for doing a wine tasting tour in Pelješac's numerous wineries. Almost 90% of Pelješac vineyards is the "Plavac mali" variety (recognizable by its small, dark blue grapes), the most famous local red grape variety of Croatia. Most vineyards and wineries are located in villages of Potomje, Dingač and Postup and you can also visit the museum of wine in the village of Putnikovići known as Museum of Viticulture and Enology - the first museum of such kind in Croatia. Another reason for visiting Pelješac is its beautiful beaches such as Žuljana, Prapratno, Divna etc. Apart from Ston, the largest town on Pelješac is a port town of Orebić, located right across the town of Korčula with frequent car and passenger ferries operating every day between Korčula island and Orebić.

Cities and places to see very close to Dubrovnik but across the border
A city in Bosnia & Herzegovina, on the Neretva river. Mostar has been the meeting point of various cultures and religions for centuries and you'll be able to see that while walking through Mostar's historic city centre. On the road between Dubrovnik and Mostar be sure to stop in a small town by the road called Počitelj or Kravice waterfalls if you'd rather spend some time in the nature! Another great way of getting to know Herzegovina region is by doing one of the "wine road" tours - the region is well known for some great locally produced wines, especially white wine made from autochthonous grape variety Žilavka and red wine made from another autochthonous grape variety Blatina.

Must see Bay of Kotor on Montenegrin coast, not far from Dubrovnik (you'll reach the border to Montenegro in about 45 minutes of driving). Kotor is the biggest and most populated town among the many smaller ones along the coast such as Perast, Risan, Herceg Novi etc. all with rich history. It has a typical Mediterranean old town centre surrounded by old city walls with citadels, towers, gates, bastions... What makes Kotor and the Bay of Kotor so fascinating is the beautiful nature around it - sea on one side and steep mountains on the other side. There is a newly opened (2023.) cable car in Kotor that you can use to reach Lovćen mountain.

A family owned restaurant with a 40 year tradition. Well known for its fish dishes, always serving only the freshest fish from local suppliers, so it depends on the catch and the weather. Other ingredients are also seasonal. Great grilled meat dishes too. The service is exceptional, very knowledgeable, with a big hint of old-school style.

Family-run authentic restaurant on Srđ hill above Dubrovnik, in the area called Bosanka. The place is surrounded by pine trees and offers stunning views down on Dubrovnik. The food is homemade and fresh and prepared in a traditional way (big emphasis is on meat). Excellent and knowledgeable staff. You can reach it by cable car and then walk some 20 minutes but getting there with a taxi is an experience in itself so I would definitely recommend that!

Located in Močići, just 5 minutes by car from Dubrovnik airport. Don't be put off by the location - you'll find the restaurant's nicely decorated garden (with playground for kids) and an open terrace hidden behind the building of Pemo grocery store. The menu is quite inventive and the place is very popular with locals and tourists alike. The restaurant offers nice breakfasts too.
