The Castillejo route runs through one of the least known valleys in the province of Granada. At the top of the mountain, at an altitude of about 405 m you will find ruins of El Castillejo de los Guájares, a fortified town inhabited between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 14th century, which corresponds mainly to the Almohad period and the beginning of the Nasrid domination. The town was divided into two parts, on the sides of a street. It was fortified, surrounded by a wall and two square-shaped towers, access is through a door with a double bend. It was suddenly abandoned at the beginning of the 14th century without the causes of said abandonment being known. It was occupied again for some time in the 16th century, during the period of the Mudejar uprising.

Los Lavaderos de la Reina is undoubtedly the quintessential route for hiking in Sierra Nevada. One of the most incredible and spectacular places in the entire National Park. The ascent to the sources of the Maitena River is a surprising encounter with the splendid geological and fluvial nature of the mountains of Nevada. The springs of the Lavaderos de la Reina originate the first steps of the river in a glacial cirque formed at the foot of the Picón de Jerez, the Puntal de los Cuartos and the Tajos Negros de Covatillas, a fantastic repertoire of three thousand in the eastern sector of Sierra Nevada.

Circular route that leaves from Güejar Sierra, follows the old Sierra Nevada tram path (next to the Genil River), and after a very pleasant walk through the ravine, you reach the junction with the Maitena River. In this section, a steep ascent begins until reaching a path and finally, it descends again to the Maitena River and, passing through the Molino del Coto, turns towards Güejar Sierra (including a stretch of road).

The area of Los Cahorros is a mid-mountain area of limestone materials, younger than the siliceous ones of the high peaks, leaving room for more abrupt but highly erodible formations. The 'V' valley of the Monachil River, due to its scarcity of soil, human action and altitude, gives rise to a vegetation of shrubs that coexists with riverbank plants, such as osiers, poplars & reeds. The flora in turn determines the fauna, rich in insectivorous and granivorous birds, amphibians and mammals such as wild boar and populations of mountain goats.

The city, sprawled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, was the last stronghold of the Spanish Moors and their legacy lies all around: it’s in the horseshoe arches, the spicy aromas emanating from street stalls, the teterías (teahouses) of the Albayzín, the historic Arab quarter. Most spectacularly, of course, it’s in the Alhambra, an astonishing palace complex whose Islamic decor and landscaped gardens are without peer in Europe. There’s also an energy to Granada’s streets, packed as they are with bars, student dives, bohemian cafes and intimate flamenco clubs, and it’s this as much as the more traditional sights that leaves a lasting impression.
