One of the closest provincial parks with a classic Nova Scotian ocean beach made up mostly of rocks and surf. If you have ever considered learning to surf or simply watching local surfers, take a 35 min drive outside the city and check it out. Also beautiful sunsets to be seen oceanside.
If you want a peaceful beach day on a 2km white sandy beach with surf rentals available as well, the 45-1hr drive to this provincial park is worth the trip.

A hidden gem that's not so hidden. An island right in the middle of the city that has some cool history. Head down to the waterfront or head over to Eastern Passage and grab a taxi boat to McNabs Island. Hike around the island, camp, go for a swim, check out the old fort or family history of the island. A short trip that's totally worth it and not that touristy or busy. A boat taxi will schedule a pick up and drop off time so you don't have to worry about being stranded on an island.

If you're into biking, this is one of the best trails you could hope to lock into. Drive to the entrance or start of the trail in Cole Harbour (about 15 min from the city) and jump on your bike and start peddling. This trail (an old railway bed) takes you for several kilometeres all the way to Lawrencetown Provincial Park. From there, the trail switches into Atlantic View Trail which continues along the ocean for another 10km. Very scenic and historic trail, well worth the bike.
